The Hebrides

About the project

The Hebrides' is an interactive light installation designed to transform transitory sites like underground train stations into enjoyable and engaging spaces. The stand-alone sculptural piece – made from organza moulded into an organic form – is suspended from the ceiling of the platform. Upon it, a series of projected, undulating lines move constantly across the surface, reacting to the movement of people below. As commuters pass beneath its canopy, a camera detects their presence and the lines part around them – as if the waves were taking a breath. The absurdity of the form and whimsical interaction contrasts heavily with the environment in which it is situated. The semi-transparency of the material ensures that the work alleviates the already chaotic atmosphere by providing the space with a moment of lightness and colours that allude to the natural world. By injecting our interactive sculpture into this purely transient space, we present a unique opportunity for commuters to divert from their normal routine and enjoy a moment of child-like wonder, of playful interaction and of genuine curiosity.
